Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's picture is being removed from the design of the taka. The graffiti of the July Revolution is going to be added instead. For now, the government has decided to change the design of the 20, 100, 500 and 1000 taka notes. The government has already given final approval to Bangladesh Bank in this regard. The mint has started the process of printing new notes. If everything goes well, these new notes will come to the market within the next six months.

It is known that the new note will not have the picture of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Instead, religious establishments, Bengali heritage and 'July Revolution graffiti' will be added. Officials of the central bank and the finance ministry said that the picture of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will be removed from the current design. Initially, changes are being made to the designs of four notes. Later, the designs of all types of bank notes in the country will be changed step by step. However, since the design has not been changed, the mint has stopped printing most of the notes since the government changed.

It is known that on September 29, the Finance Department of the Ministry of Finance wrote to Bangladesh Bank to submit a detailed design proposal for the new note. However, the main recommendation on printing the new note will be made by the central bank's Currency and Design Advisory Committee. This committee also includes artists. They finalize the design of the note and send the proposal to the government for approval.

The Security Printing Corporation (Bangladesh) Limited, known as the Mint, does the printing of currency in Bangladesh. Although it was established in 1976, the printing of notes started in June 1988 with the printing of one taka. The government approves the design before printing the note. The design of the note is finalized with the help of artists. Once the design is finalized, paper, ink and plates are made through international tenders.

After the plates are made and brought from abroad according to the design, the Mint does the printing. However, the metal coins are brought from abroad. A Mint official said that a tender will be called this month. Once this process is completed, the printing work will start. The new money will be in the market before next June.

Currently, 10 paper notes of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 taka are in the market. Of these, all paper notes from 2 taka to 1000 taka have the picture of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Some notes have the picture of Sheikh Mujib on both sides. Apart from this, the metal coins also have his picture.

According to the annual report of Bangladesh Bank, in the last fiscal year 2022-23, 38,400 crore taka was spent on printing new notes. In the previous fiscal year, the cost was 37,400 crore taka. And in the fiscal year 2020-21, 34,000 crore taka was spent. The last new design of the 200 taka note was introduced in 2020.

After the new notes come into the market, the old notes will also be in use. However, they will be withdrawn gradually. The old notes can be deposited in the bank. The new notes are already being widely discussed on social media. Many have welcomed the initiative. However, some people are questioning its cost.

Environmental aspects have also been given importance in the design of the notes. Special paper and eco-friendly colors have been used. Since the notes are durable, they can be used for a long time. In terms of security, it will be the most modern note in the country.

This initiative will bring the new generation closer to the country's history, culture, and economy. As a result, a new dimension will be added to the preservation of the country's heritage. By introducing the new notes, the government wants to make the economic sector more efficient and transparent. This is being considered a groundbreaking step in the country's financial development and preservation of cultural heritage. People's curiosity about the new notes is increasing. On the one hand, it is a unique example of a combination of history and technology.
